The Iowa State Bar Association is the oldest voluntary state bar association in the U.S. It was founded in 1874 at the Polk County courthouse. It is now headquartered in Des Moines and has 8000 current and active members.
It no longer regulates or governs the legal industry in Iowa. The Iowa Supreme Court took over this obligation in 1995.
The organization now serves as a source of information and services for both members and the public. Its Board of Governors consists of 43 members who are elected from the state’s 14 judicial districts. From the 43 members, board governors elect a president and vice-president for the year.
One of the benefits that it offers to lawyers who sign up for and pay for membership is access to CLE courses and preparation. The CLE course information includes dates of classes and exams. It also lists information about preparation resources lawyers can use prior to taking the CLE lessons.
It also offers practice tools that lawyers can use to start or expand their own practices. These tools are free for members to access and are updated on a regular basis. They include access to free legal research that can help them build cases and represent clients of their own. They do not have to pay to have case law located or provided to them.
The public can also use the association’s website for information on starting or building cases. For example, people who cannot afford to hire an attorney may benefit from the organization’s pro bono program. This program allows qualifying clients to get legal services at no cost. The pro bono program is outlined in detail on the association’s website.
Another resource that the public can use is the free case help tool. This tool permits people to find out if they have a case and what it will take to bring it to fruition. The information provided via this tool allows people to be an active and educated part of their own cases.
Finally, people from the public can research and find lawyers who practice in their neighborhoods at no cost. They do not have to waste time making phone calls to locate a lawyer. They can get a free referral on the association’s website.
The Iowa State Bar Association is located at 625 East Court Avenue in Des Moines, 50309. It offers conference rooms for members to use at its physical location.
