The Connecticut Bar Association is a voluntary bar association that does not require attorneys in the state to join. It was created in 1875 and now headquartered in New Britain. Shortly after the creation of the Connecticut Bar Association, several of its members gathered in Saratoga Springs in New York. Their gathering led to the creation of the American Bar Association.
While a voluntary legal organization, the Connecticut Bar Association has a membership of more than 6500. In fact, around 70 percent of all of the lawyers in the state choose to join the association for its membership perks as well as the opportunity to network with other lawyers around the state.
The Connecticut Bar Association does not regulate the practice of law in the state. It also does not discipline attorneys who violate ethical and professional standards. These obligations are left to the Connecticut Bar Examining Committee of the Connecticut Judicial Branch.
However, the association does offer a number of benefits to its members including discounts with businesses throughout the state. For example, members can receive 10 percent off car rentals from Hertz. They also receive 10, 25, or 50 percent off New York Yankees tickets depending on the game they plan to attend.
The association also provides benefits to members of the public who need legal assistance with a variet of matters. For example, the public is encouraged to use the Find a Lawyer CT resource on the association’s website. This resource is a free directory that provides the names and contact information for member attorneys in all legal specialties.
The website also offers information on the association’s pro bono program, which allows qualifying clients to receive free legal services. The pro bono link provides a list of attorneys and law firms who are willing to offer free legal help to people who meet the criteria of the program.
Another resource that is available for the public to use is the Connecticut Free Legal Answers, which is found on the association’s website. This resource allows the public to research legal topics and participate in the building of their own cases. Topics covered in the resource range from how to start a business to filing for divorce or child custody in the state.
The Connecticut Bar Association is located at 30 Bank Street in New Britain, 06051. The association is also active on social networking sites like Twitter.
