The Colorado State Bar Association or CBA is a voluntary state bar that does not require in-state attorneys to join. It was founded in 1897 in Denver, Colorado. Despite not requiring membership of attorneys in the state, around 73 percent of all Colorado lawyers decide to join it. It has a total membership of 18,000.
The CBA is governed by 21 Board of Governor members, 20 of whom are elected to the board every year. The board’s executive director is not elected but rather hired by the board directly. The board meets on an annual basis to discuss a variety of topics including governance, budgeting, communications, and other topics.
While membership to the CBA is not mandatory, it does offer benefits that are not available to lawyers who decide not to join. Namely, members of the CBA get access to discounts at various merchants and businesses throughout the state. For example, CBA members can receive 15 percent off purchases at stores like Brooks Brothers and the ABA Webstore. Other perks include low-cost credit card processing and 26 percent off costs of FedEx shipping.
Additionally, members are entitled to the CBA’s The Colorado Lawyer, which is a state bar association official publication. It is published on a regular basis and provides updated information on the legal profession in the state of Colorado.
While it does not regulate or oversee the conduct of attorneys in the state, the CBA can help the public file complaints against attorneys or judges. It offers resources on filing official complaints with the state’s Office of Attorney Regulation, which is responsible for managing the conduct of state attorneys as well as meting out discipline for those who are in violation of professional standards.
The CBA also provides free information about attorneys who are members. The attorney directory is provided at no cost to the public and is kept updated so potential clients have the latest contact information for attorneys. Clients can also use the Casemaker resource on the website to determine what legal action to take.
The Colorado State Bar Association is located at 1000 Grant Street, Suite 900 in Denver, Colorado, 80203. Along with maintaining an updated website, the CBA also has several social media accounts on Facebook and others through which the public can make contact with it.
